Background:
Based in Chalkwell Park, beside Westcliff’s high street, Leigh-on-Sea Cricket Club was founded in 1907 and offers both competitive and social cricket to a variety of age-groups. Primarily the cricket season runs from April to September, but currently the club is aiming to build on the social side of the services they offer with the intention of remaining open all year round.
As such, the club remains busy both day and night by offering a friendly atmosphere at its on-site bar. Currently, Friday and Saturday are the two busiest nights of the week. Fridays, the club caters to a large number of local youth players and adults who use the club to play and socialise. Following this, Saturdays, the club plays host to the visiting away team which makes for another busy day.
Every year over the last week of July the club arranges a Summer Cricket Week which provides fun and entertainment each night of the week, and as a result receives hundreds of visiting cricket members from all over the surrounding area. As well as this, the club is also home to Mucky Mits, a children’s activity group which allows kids and their parents to meet and play together three times a week.
Recently the club underwent a major refurbishment thanks to one of their local sponsors Decorus Decorators. At present the club receives support from a number of sponsors: Decorus being one of them and, Payeday, and Wilson James. All of whom have their own profile pages set-up and maintained by the club on its website.
Membership:
The club functions as a home ground to several local adult teams, as well as maintaining a number of youth-orientated cricket programmes, including teams and coaching sessions, with members ranging from 7 to 16 years of age. Most members are local, but a number also travel from the surrounding areas of South East Essex to participate in the clubs activities.
Cricket facilities:
The main playing area consists of a large playing field situated on the Western side of Chalkwell Park. Chalkwell Park School also make use of the field on a regular basis, and the club has access to all necessary equipment to its teams for both training and participating purposes.
Bar facilities:
As with the rest of the club, the bar facilities have recently undergone a significant refurbishment, including freshly repainted walls, and restored restroom facilities. As a great summer venue, the bar manager keeps a diary of any upcoming events available on site.
On average, the main room is capable of holding around 150 people, which the club is open to hiring out for hosting formal or social events, though it does not contain a substantial ‘sit down’ area for meals. There is a car park within the park capable of housing roughly 50 vehicles, as well as additional parking space available on the surrounding streets.
Essex Pirates
Essex Pirates' Colin Sing on song with GB basketball side
ESSEX Pirates’ Colin Sing has been selected in Great Britain’s newly-established under-23 basketball squad.
The youngster impressed in the BBL with the Southend-based side last season.
And he is thrilled to be the one of only two non-American based players in the party.
“I’m really pleased and shocked to have been called up,” said Sing.
“I’m proud to play for my country and I’m really looking forward to these matches.”
Sing and his team-mates will take part a four-team tournament in Lille from June 18-20 against France, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Chris Finch will take charge of the GB Futures team with Paul James, the head coach of England Senior Men and BBL team Worcester Wolves, as his assistant.
They are hoping to secure success for the side and the British Basketball performance director Chris Spice believes that the tournament is an exciting opportunity for British basketball.
“Our vision was to create a programme that will keep developing long beyond the delivery of 2012, and the Future’s team is just one of many strands in place to ensure this happens,” said Spice.
“We take the legacy of the sport very seriously, and to have the commitment of Chris Finch is a demonstration of this. We believe that the selected players will be an important part in the long-term future of the GB team.
“It will be a challenging programme, but it will provide the players with a lot of experience and game time, while also receiving some of the best coaching GB has to offer.
“I have no doubt that all the selected players will take this opportunity to ensure they are an important part of British basketball for years to come.”
The team will assemble on June 14 for three days of training, before heading to Lille which will see them take on France (June 18), Belgium (June 19) and Luxembourg (June 20).
Sing has played for two seasons with Great Britain’s under 20s and England at under 18 level.
GB Futures Team: Ogo Adegboye (Saint Bonavenutre University, USA), Devan Bailey (Central Connecticut State, USA), Matthew Bryan-Amaning (University of Washington, USA), Adrien Sturt (Dexia Mons-Hainaut, Belgium), Ben Eaves (Rhode Island University, USA), Matt Guymon (unattached), Ashley Hamilton (Loyola Maramount University, USA), Liam Potter, Liam (Sacred Heart University, USA) Justin Jones Robinson (Rider University, USA), Colin Sing (Essex Pirates, UK) .
Grassroots Sponsorship Seminar 04/14/10
The event was designed with grassroots sports firmly in mind, to help educate and give tools to those who need it the most in these tough times. With many clubs, associations, leagues and athletes struggling we aim to educate those attending in how to approach sponsors, how they should view sponsorship and the basics to help them on their way to a successful future.
The event was made up of some great speakers who spoke from experience on the subject. They included;
FIONA GREEN – Fiona has worked on the commercial side of sport for the past 21 years. Over the years Fiona has worked on 2 UEFA European Championships (EURO 96 and Euro 2000) and 3 FIFA World Cups (USA 94, France 98 and Japan/Korea 2002). Fiona has also worked with the English Cricket Board, UK Athletics, Special Olympics and the Lawn Tennis Association to name just a few. Currently Fiona runs a small sports marketing consultancy advising corporate sponsors, media partners, and sports rights holders and recently appointed a Non-Executive Director at Notts County FC.
ALEX ALLEY – Alex is a professional sailor who has already completed one round the world race and has over 100,000 miles of racing behind him. Alex has produced a unique sponsorship strategy to aid his entry to the 2010/11 Global Ocean Race by developing www.peoplesboat.com. He is opening it up for everyone to be able to take part, from small individual sponsorships to large company packages that include corporate days on the boat. After the race Alex will sell the boat and raise between £150,000 – £200,000 for charity.
If you have any questions about the event or would like more information on holding your own seminar please feel free to get in touch at daniel@theuksportsnetwork.com or leave a comment below.
Essex Pirates sign on with the 'PACK'
The Essex Pirate Basketball team are the latest club to join forces with SponsorPACK.
Have a look at their recent exploits with BBC Radio 2's DJ Chris Evans Breakfast Show Sporting Challenge - Basketball
Chris and Jonny are really tall men. So, basketball's going to be easy for them, right? Wrong.
For the ninth challenge, we took Chris and Jonny to Little Venice Sports Centre
to play against John Amaechi (the only British basketball player ever
to get inducted into the NBA Hall Of Fame) and the Essex Pirates.

Do you really deserve their support?
On the discussion forum of a second tier winter sports club we found following posting from a young man who has been a loyal supporter and frequent contributor for at least 4-5 years. (Identity of club withheld by SMN).
“Recently, I have been trying to purchase a season student season ticket. They ask you to supply proof of full time education, fair enough. So I send them my confirmation letter, proving that I will be attending this September. However, they claim this isn't proof and ask me to get contact the university direct. I do, and forward on what they send me. However, Club X still are not happy. They ask me to send a copy of the letter where I "confirm I am attending." They clearly have no idea how the university application system works as at no point does this happen.
What dedication to the club! Three days later, no response from Club X. In another posting the young man discloses that the university he is joining is one of our leading sports universities, located only 30-45 minutes away. Not a bad hunting ground for supporters one would have thought.
One comment to this posting came from a ‘diehard’ who in previous postings have made it clear that in her mind Club X can do no wrong. She also confirms that these students should not expect preferential treatment and finishes her posting with the words: "Don't give up, but rules are rules."
"Everybody at the club knows how important it is to get Kingston Park buzzing on match day, and the players have been working hard behind the scenes to come up with some deals to try and pack the place out," said a representative from the Falcons.
"With such a massive student population in and around the city it makes sense to really target those guys and get them on board, and the players have all been chipping in to help organise what looks to be a great deal."
How do you treat your town's students and other segments? Design and provide specific packages to attract them to your club or is it 'rules are rules?'
